UCONN Huskies — Back-to-Back National Championships

Thursday, April 8th, 2010 | College Basketball, Final Four, NCAA College Basketball, Sports | No Comments

We just had to write about this – how often does a team go undefeated 2 seasons in a row to win 2 consecutive national titles?  Never!  So that’s why we had to highlight this incredible run by the UCONN Huskies Women’s College Basketball team. One season of 39-0 – maybe some luck is in involved.  But 2 straight 39-0 seasons – you’ve gotta be kidding me.

On Tuesday night, UCONN defeated Stanford in the NCAA National Title Game of the Final Four 53-47.  While UCONN had dominated most teams en route to a perfect 38-0 record heading into the finals, the Huskies appeared to be mortal in the game against the Cardinal.  Check out these stats:

- the team missed 16 consecutive field goal attempts during 1 stretch in the 1st half;

- the went over 10 minutes in the half without scoring a single point;

- they trailed 20-12 at halftime – only 12 points in one half?!.

But in the end, the team rallied around its leaders and put together a memorable second half performance to pull off a “rare” come-from-behind win to preserve their perfect season.  Make it 78 wins in a row and a 2nd consecutive national title for UCONN.

Head Coach Gino Auriemma has built a dynasty in Storrs, Connecticut.  And although his team made it “interesting” for him on Tuesday night, he was thrilled with their resolve — “There was a point in time where it looked like we may never score again.  To come out in the 2nd half and make some of the plays that we made and have Maya Moore make some of the shots that she made, it was a real testament to these kids and how strong they are and how tough they are and how resilient they are.”

Maya Moore was the reason that the Huskies won – she scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.  T  Charles also had a solid game for the Huskies with 9 points, 11 rebounds and 6 blocked shots.

Will the Huskies be able to make it 3 perfect seasons in a row?  Will they be able to run their winning streak to 100 games?  This will surely make for an exciting beginning to the women’s college basketball season in November 2010…

#3 UConn Tops #19 Notre Dame 69-61 in South Bend

Sunday, January 25th, 2009 | College Basketball, Sports | No Comments

All good things must come to an end. The UConn Huskies – the #3 ranked team in the nation – waltzed into Joyce Center in South Bend on Saturday afternoon and handed the Irish their 1st home loss in almost 3 years. The Irish last lost at the Joyce Center to Marquette 80-72 back on February 25, 2006. The loss also sent Notre Dame to its first 3-game losing streak in almost 3 years as well. UConn (18-1, 7-1 in the Big East) held Notre Dame (12-6, 3-4 in the Big East) to just 33% shooting from the field – its worst field goal percentage in a game all season, and used a late 13-1 run to put the game away.

The lone bright spot for Notre Dame – Center Luke Harangody who scored 24 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. It was Harangody’s 11th straight game with at least 20 points and also his 8th straight double-double.
