The Metro located at 3730 N Clark just steps away from Wrigley Field is one of Chicago best small places to see a show. Built in 1927 the 1100 person venue was a Swedish Community Center The Metro was used as a jazz/folk club until 1982 when it was acquired by Joe Shanahan. Shanahan, a Chicago native who spent a year in New York to live in the art, music and dance culture moved back and realized Chicago was missing something. He wanted a club in Chicago that could bring local, regional, and national emerging artists to a venue in Chicago. The club on the lower level of Metro called Smart Bar became a fast success with bands such as Ministry and Trent Reznor debuting new music in the super small club. At this time Shanahan wanted to expended on the larger room in the building and found a little know band he met in New York. He posted some ad’s for a five buck show for R.E.M and the show was a big hit. In the first year Metro was open they featured some big name bands New Order, Depeche Mode, Killing Joke, Billy Idol, and O.M.D. In the 90s the Metro showcased some big name alternative names such as The Smashing Pumpkins, Urge Overkill, Liz Phair, and Veruca Salt
