Another day, another loss for the Chicago Bulls. The Bulls have now lost 7 of their last 10 games and stand at 16-22 – a season-high 6 games under .500. After taking a 28-21 1st quarter lead, nothing went right for the Bulls the rest of the way. The Bulls allowed Travis Outlaw to score a career-high 33 points off the bench. Greg Oden dominated inside with 17 points and 13 rebounds. And although the Bulls were able to keep Brandon Roy in-check with only 11 points, Roy did grab 8 rebounds and Steve Blake was able to score 16 points while dishing out 10 assists.

As usual, the Bulls did get a solid performance from Drew Gooden – 22 points and 9 rebounds. Ben Gordon chipped in 17 points, while Derrick Rose scored 13 points and dished out 10 assists. The Bulls did get back 2 regulars of the recent past – Loul Deng (14 points and 5 rebounds in 22 minutes) and Kirk Hinrich (4 points and 3 assists in 21 minutes). Both have missed significant playng time during the 2008-9 NBA season.

Now that the Bulls have all of their players back healthy, it will be interesting to see how 1st year coach Vinny Del Negro keeps everyone happy. Because the Bulls have a slim chance at making the playoffs, the rest of the season will be dedicated to show-casing talent to determine who will get traded and who will stay on the roster. Del Negro and GM John Paxson have their work cut out for them over the next few years. With super-star Derrick Rose blossoming on the pro level, the Bulls organization needs to find a way to surround him with quality talent to take the next step towards legitimate playoff contention. Will Paxson be able to work some magic? We’ll have to wait and see…

Bulls Lose Laugher in Portland, 116-74

Thursday, November 20th, 2008 | Chicago Bulls, NBA, Sports | No Comments

This will be my shortest Bulls blog of the year. It pained me to watch just the 1st half of this embarrassing game. Just a couple of quick notes. The Bulls didn’t win a single quarter and they didn’t win didn’t score more than 24 points in any quarter. The Bulls scored a paltry 13 points in the 1st quarter and trailed by 21 points after 12 minutes of play. How does that happen? The Bulls leading scorer was bench player Andres Nocioni with 13 points. Ben Gordon was held to a season-low 11 points and for the 1st time this season, Bulls rookie point guard Derrick Rose did not score in double-digit figures – he finished the game with only 6 points on 1 of 8 shooting. The Bulls were out-rebounded 49-33. The Bulls remain winless on the road during the young NBA season.

The Bulls allowed 6 Trailblazers to score in double-digits. The #1 overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, Greg Oden, scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in only 17 minutes of play.

Let’s hope Vinny D and the Bulls have a short memory with this one. There’s no reason to watch any game tape of this embarrassing performance. At this point, barring a miracle, the Bulls will go 0 for 6 on the west coast portion of the Circus Road trip. With games against Golden State (5-6), Denver (8-4), Utah (8-4) and San Antonio (5-6), it’s going to take a Herculean effort for the crew to pull off an upset win in any of those road stadiums.

Greg Oden Out 2-4 Weeks

Thursday, October 30th, 2008 | NBA, Sports | No Comments

An MRI on the right foot of Center Greg Oden revealed a mid-lateral foot sprain. Oden is expected to miss 2-4 weeks with the injury. Oden injured the foot in the 1st quarter of the Trailblazers opening night loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night. Oden didn’t think twice about it and stayed in the game until the pain forced him out towards the end of the 1st half. Oden is still searching for his first NBA point, as the Lakers held him scoreless in his 13 minutes of play. Oden had 5 rebounds, 1 blocked shot, and 2 turnovers before he departed. Although Oden played the entire pre-season before the 2007-8 NBA season, he had to have surgery on his right knee that required him to miss the entire regular season.

The early injury to Oden put a damper on the Trailblazers expectations for the 2008-9 NBA season. Joel Przybilla will start for the Trailblazers in Oden’s absence. The Trailblazers next face the San Antonio Spurs at home on Halloween night.

Oden Hurts Foot in 97-76 Loss To Lakers

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008 | NBA, Sports | No Comments

The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Portland Trailblazers 97-76 in the 2008-9 NBA season opener for each team in Los Angeles. Although star Kobe Bryant scored 23 points, along with 11 rebounds and 5 assists, all of the talk was about the injury suffered by the Trailblazers 7-foot center Greg Oden. Oden injured his right foot late in the 1st half and never returned to the game. X-rays were negative and Oden will undergo an MRI to assess the damage to the foot. Right now, Oden’s injury is diagnosed as a sprain, and nothing more than that.

Oden, the 1st overall pick in the 2007 NBA draft, never played a single game during the 2007-8 NBA season due to the discovery of an off-season injury to his right knee that required microfracture surgery. There was a lot of hype surrounding Oden’s first NBA game, especially since it was coming in L.A. and against the greatest player in the game today – Kobe Bryant. The excitement was short-lived. In his brief 12 minutes of play, Oden racked up 5 rebounds and blocked 1 shot, but he did not score a single point and he had already picked up 2 personal fouls.

The game was all but over after the 1st half. The Lakers had opened up a 15-point halftime lead and they cruised to a 21-point victory in the 2nd half. Pau Gasol had 15 points and 7 rebounds for the Lakers, while Center Andrew Bynum returned from an injury during the middle of last season to score 8 points and grab 3 rebounds. The Trailblazers had 3 players score in double figures – Brandon Roy, Travis Outlaw and Rudy Fernandez.
