Blackhawks Get Back On Track With 3-1 Win Over Thrashers
Friday, February 13th, 2009 | Chicago Blackhawks, NHL, Sports | No Comments
The Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Atlanta Thrashers 3-1 on Thursday night. After a scoreless 1st period, the Blackhawks scored first on Patrick Sharp’s power play goal 14 minutes into the 2nd period. The Thrashers tied it up just 4 minutes later on Ilya Kovalchuk’s 24th goal of the season, but the Blackhawks quickly answered with another power play goal of their own by Jonathan Toews just 21 seconds later. Blackhawks goalie Nikolai Khabibulin did the rest, holding the Thrashers to the lone goal despite 37 shots on goal. Khabibulin is now 17-5-5 on the season with a .924 save average, but is still considered to be trade bait given the fact that it is unlikely that the Blackhawks will re-sign him after this season.
The Blackhawks finish up an 8-game road trip on Friday night in St. Louis. The Blackhawks are currently 5-2 on the road trip and return home to the United Center on Saturday with a game against the Dallas Stars.

Blackhawks Top Flames 5-2 in Calgary
Saturday, February 7th, 2009 | Chicago Blackhawks, NHL, Sports | No Comments

The Chicago Blackhawks beat the Calgary Flames 5-2 in Calgary on Thursday night. The Blackhawks remain unbeaten this season in games played across the Canadian border – 7-0 currently. The 1st period was as exciting as they come – as each team traded goals twice to close out a 2-2 period. Dave Bolland scored his 11th goal of the season and Andrew Ladd knocked home his 9th of the season. Then the Blackhawks took over. They scored the next 3 goals and the defense shut down the Flames offensive attack, as they cruised to a 5-2 win. Adam Burish’s 4th goal of the season midway through the 2nd period gave the Blackhawks the lead for good. Colin Fraser and Troy Brouwer finished off the game’s scoring with goals in the 3rd period. Nikolai Khabibulin saved 29 of 31 shots on goal and won his 3rd straight game. He is now 16-4-5 on the season.
The Blackhawks have 3 games left on their current road trip before returning home to face the Dallas Stars at the United Center on Valentine’s Day Night. With the win, the Blackhawks jumped ahead of the Flames in point total – 66 to 64. But because of divisional rules, the Flames are still the 3rd seed in the Western Conference because they are the Northwest division leader. The Blackhawks, on the other hand, still trail the Detroit Red Wings by 7 points in the race for the Central Division title.
Blackhawks Continue Great Road Trip, Beat Oilers 3-1
Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 | Chicago Blackhawks, NHL, Sports | No Comments
The Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Edmonton Oilers 3-1 on Tuesday night in Canada. After falling behind 1-0 in the 1st period, the Blackhawks scored the game’s final 3 goals to pull off the 3-1 win. Cam Barker’s 4th goal of the season tied the game at 1 just 3 minutes into the 2nd period. Dave Bolland’s 10th goal of the season gave the Blackhawks the lead for good with just under 4 minutes left to play in the 2nd period. Martin Havlat’s 16th goal of the season gave the Blackhawks some cushion for a 3-1 lead midway through the 3rd period. The Blackhawks exploded for 41 shots, but could only manage to land 3 behind Oilers goalie Dwayne Roloson. Cristobal Huet saved 20 of 21 shots for the Blackhawks and won his first game in 3 starts. He now has 13 wins on the season and a 2.31 goals-against-average.
The Blackhawks have 64 points and maintained their 7-point advantage over the 5th seed Anaheim Ducks in the Western Conference.

Blackhawks Hand Sharks Rare Home Loss
Monday, February 2nd, 2009 | Chicago Blackhawks, NHL, Sports | No Comments
The Chicago Blackhawks did something only 1 other NHL team had done this season – beat the Sharks at home during regulation. On Saturday night, the Blackhawks topped the Sharks 4-2 at the HP Pavilion, knocking the Sharks home record down to 23-2-2 in 25 games. The teams traded 1st period goals – Jonathan Toews’ 15th goal of the season gave the Blackhawks an early 1-0 lead. During the 2nd period, the Blackhawks built a 3-1 lead on a short-handed goal by Kris Versteeg (his 14th goal of the season) and a power play goal by Jonathan Toews (pushing him up to 16 goals on the season). Duncan Keith’s 6th goal of the season gave the Blackhawks a commanding 4-1 lead in the 3rd period, and the Blackhawks withstood a 34-shot barrage by the Sharks to pull off the win. Nikolai Khabibulin improved his record to 15-4-5. It was the Blackhawks first win in 6 years in San Jose.
The win earned the Blackhawks a trip to Las Vegas to watch the Super Bowl and “relax” in Sin City before the team resumes its 8-game road trip. The Blackhawks still have 5 games left to play with the next game occurring on Tuesday night in Edmonton. Going into the Sharks game, the Blackhawks had gone winless in 6 games against the Western Conference’s top 2 teams – Sharks and the Detroit Red Wings. The Blackhawks now have 27 wins and 62 points, which is tied for the 7th most points in the NHL with the New York Rangers and the Montreal Canadiens.

Blackhawks Start Flat, Lose To Kings 5-2
Saturday, January 31st, 2009 | Chicago Blackhawks, NHL, Sports | No Comments

Whoops!
Not a good night in L.A. for the Blackhawks. The Blackhawks fell behind the Kings 3-0 after 2 periods in Los Angeles and never had enough to make it close down the stretch. Dave Bolland’s 9th goal of the season cut the Kings lead to 3-1 7 minutes into the 3rd period, but the Kings answered with Alexander Frolov’s 21st goal of the season just 40 seconds later. One bright spot – Patrick Sharp scored his 22nd goal of the season. The Kings only took 25 total shots, but they made them count – scoring on 4 of them plus their empty netter. Cristobal Huet fell to 12-9-3 on the year. The Blackhawks are now 26-13-8 with 60 points. They are still locked into the 4th seed in the Western Conference, 7 points ahead of each of the Edmonton Oilers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Phoenix Coyote and Anaheim Ducks. They also have at least 1 game in hand against each of those teams.
Forsberg won’t be back in NHL
Friday, January 30th, 2009 | NHL | No Comments
Peter Forsberg has said he will not be back in the NHL this season. Forsberg told Sweden’s national broadcaster that if he is able to play it will be for his hometown club Modo in the Swedish league. Forsberg, made a late return to the Avalanche last year, but injuries kept him out of half of the team’s final 18 games. He also missed three of four games in the second round of the playoffs. He has been back on the ice in recent weeks to test out his ailing right foot. No word on how he is feeling and if the tests are working.
Blackhawks Start Post All-Star Break Run With 3-2 Win Over Ducks
Thursday, January 29th, 2009 | Chicago Blackhawks, NHL, Sports | No Comments
The Chicago Blackhawks got off to the right start on Wednesday night with a 3-2 win over the Ducks in Anaheim. It was a great win for a few reasons. First, the Blackhawks had lost 3 of their last 4 games, so it was good to get a “W” under their belts. Second, the Blackhawks avoided a post-All-Star Break funk to start off the 2nd half of the season with an all-important victory. Third, the trip to Anaheim marked the 1st game of an 8-game road trip, so every win on the road will be a big one for the Blackhawks in their chase for a high seed in the NHL’s Western Conference.
The Blackhawks held a 2-1 advantage after the 1st period on goals by Adam Burish – his 3rd goal of the season – and Patrick Kane – his 17th goal of the season. The Blackhawks extended the lead to 3-1 just 3 minutes into the 2nd period on Jonathan Toews 14th goal of the season. Duncan Keith – in his first action in several games since suffering a concussion – assisted on the Toews goal. Blackhawks Goalie Nikolai Khabibulin did the rest. He allowed only 1 more goal the rest of the way to preserve the 3-2 win for the Blackhawks. Overall, Khabibulin saved 36 of 38 shots on goal and improved his record to 14-4-5 on the season.
Next up for the Blackhawks is another game tonight in the L.A. area – against the Kings at the Staples Center. The Blackhawks still hold the 4th seed in the Western Conference with a 46-26-12 record and 60 points. They still have a lot of work to do if they want to catch the Detroit Red Wings for the Central Division title – they trail the Red Wings by 9 points – but they still have a nice 7-point cushion over the Ducks and Coyotes for the 4th spot in the playoffs.

Blackhawks Lose 2nd Straight Home Game at United Center
Tuesday, January 20th, 2009 | Chicago Blackhawks, NHL, Sports | No Comments
The Chicago Blackhawks are establishing a “new”, but “bad” trend at the United Center – losing. After losing to the Rangers 3-2 in overtime on Friday night at the United Center, the Blackhawks came out flat against the Minnesota Wild on Monday night and could never rally enough to mount a comeback. The Blackhawks are now 14-2-5 at the United Center this season. The Wild scored 2 goals in the 1st period and added a 3rd goal in the 2nd period on Marek Zidlicky’s 2nd goal of the night to increase their lead to 3-0. Martin Havlat’s 15th goal of the season cut the lead to 3-1 midway through the 2nd period (more on this later), but neither team scored again until Cal Clutterbuck’s empty netter with 34 seconds left in the game. The Wild won the game 4-1. Nikolai Khabibulin struggled in net – saving only 22 of 25 Wild shots on goal. The Blackhawks did tally 41 shots on goal, but Wild goalie Backstrom came up strong, saving all but one of the shots.
Defenseman Duncan Keith missed his 3rd straight game for the Blackhawks with a concussion.
The Blackhawks fell to 25-11-8, but still have a solid hold on the 4th seed in the Western Conference with 58 points (7-point leads over both the Anaheim Ducks and the Phoenix Coyotes). With the win, the Wild moved into a tie for the 8th seed in the Western Conference with 49 points.
There was one positive from the Blackhawks loss at the United Center. Martin Havlat’s lone Blackhawks goal came at the 10:00 mark of the 2nd period. Not a big deal, right? Think again – the Illinois has an ongoing promotion where they will give one lucky fan $1 million if the Blackhawks score a goal at precisely the 10:00 minute mark of the 2nd period. So the lucky season ticket holder in Section 326 won the $1 million and will be honored at the Hawks game against the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday night. He did already meet Martin Havlat after the game to celebrate the award.

Blackhawks Lose To Rangers 3-2 in OT
Saturday, January 17th, 2009 | Chicago Blackhawks, NHL, Sports | No Comments
The Chicago Blackhawks had their chances against one of the Eastern Conference’s best teams, but they couldn’t convert often enough and ended up falling to the New York Rangers 3-2 in overtime. The Rangers killed 10 of 11 Blackhawks power plays, thwarting chance after chance served up by the home ice Blackhawks. The worst stretch came at the end of the 2nd period when the Blackhawks had at least a one-man advantage for 5:45 straight and could not come away with a goal. The Blackhawks even had 5 on 3 advantages 5 times during the game, but could only score 1 goal during those stretches. Disappointing to say the least.
Jonathan Toews gave the Blackhawks the lead in the 1st period with his 13th goal of the game. The Rangers scored the next 2 goals – Chris Drury’s 14th goal in the 2nd period and Brandon Dubinsky’s 7th goal in the 3rd period – to give New York the 2-1 edge. Brent Seabrook’s 5th goal of the season tied the game for the Blackhawks with just under 5 minutes left in regulation.
The 2 teams skated to tie at the end of 60 minutes, but Chris Drury’s 2nd power play goal of the night (his 15th on the year), gave the Rangers the impressive road win at a hostile United Center. The Rangers should tip their hat to Henrik Lundqvist who stopped 32 of 34 Blackhawks shots. He improved his record to 23-12-3 on the season.
After the disappointing loss, the Blackhawks have to head to St. Louis today to face the Blues tonight. Let’s hope the frustrating performance doesn’t carry over into tonight’s game against the intra-division rival. The Blues are tied for the lowest points total in the entire NHL, so hopefully the Blackhawks should be able to overcome a mini-hangover in St. Louis.
