White Sox pick up a old guy

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 | Chicago White Sox, MLB | No Comments

vizquelCHICAGO — The number 13 universally has been considered unlucky, from omitted hotel floors representing that sum to athletes avoiding it on their respective jerseys.

In the White Sox organization, it apparently stands as a guarded treasure.

That fact became apparent on Monday, as the White Sox officially introduced Omar Vizquel as the newest member of their Major League team. In a signing first reported at the end of last week, when free agency officially began, the 42-year-old Vizquel agreed to a one-year, $1.375 million deal to serve as the South Siders’ primary utility infielder.

Just one problem exists in this deal, which figures to stand as a boon for the White Sox playoff cause. Vizquel wears jersey No. 13 and so does White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, which means Vizquel won’t be wearing No. 13 in Chicago.

“Omar is not going to have enough money to pay for the number,” said Guillen with a laugh, discussing the Vizquel signing during a late afternoon conference call. “I already collect watches. I have two cars, and the car I really want, I don’t think he’s going to buy.”

Peavy finally in Chicago

Saturday, August 1st, 2009 | Chicago White Sox, MLB, Sports | 1 Comment

Jake Peavy has finally arrived Chicago, the White Sox originally had talks with Peavy back in May but that fell apart fast. Peavy who had a no-trade clause waved it to get the deal done with Chicago and the Sox gave up five players in the deal. Two of which are young pitchers that could have some good futures in front of them. Peavy 28, is 6-6 with a 3.97 ERA in 13 starts with the Padres this year but is on the DL since June 13 with a strained tendon in his right ankle. This could mean that Peavy won’t be of much help for the White Sox this season since he is not expected back until the end of August. The way it looks the Sox are not going to move things along to fast since they want him 100% for next season. ” I was shocked,” Ozzie Guillen said “We got better and now we got one guy we wanted for a long time”. Peavy is making $11 million this years and has a salary of $15 million in 2010, $16 million in 2011, and $17 million in 2012.

bartolo_colonFormer Cy Young Award winner and two time All-Star Bartolo Colon agreed to a one year $1 million deal with the White Sox. Colon could earn $2 million more based on innings. He pitched for the White Sox in 2003 with a 3.87 ERA going 15-13 and having a 173 strikeouts. Last year the 35 year old right handier was only able to make seven starts with the Red Sox because of back stiffness that put him on the DL for 3 months.

Sox ousted by Rays in NLDS Game 4

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008 | Sports | No Comments

The Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Chicago White Sox 6-2 on Monday 10/6 to clinch its first post-season series victory in franchise history.  B.J. Upton set the tone for the Rays with solo home runs in each of the 1st and 3rd innings.  The Rays tacked on 3 more runs in the 4th and 5th innings to extend the lead to 5-1.   Rays starter Andy Sonnanstine did the rest as he pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing only 2 earned runs on 3 hits.  Sonnanstine never really got into any serious trouble as he allowed solo home runs to Paul Konerko and Jermaine Dye.  Rays relievers J.P. Howell and Grant Balfour finished out the final 3 1/3 innings allowing only 2 base runners in the final 3 innings.  White Sox starter Gavin Floyd never found his true form – he lasted only 3 innings, giving up 4 earned runs on 5 hits and 2 walks.  The Rays magical season continues on as they will face the Boston Red Sox – their AL East pursuer – in the American League Championship Series set to begin on Friday, October 10th in Tampa Bay, Florida.

Cubs’ Pitchers Shine in 2008 All-Star Game

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008 | Sports | No Comments

The city of Chicago sent 9 players to the 2008 All-Star and the performances of the Cubs’ pitchers did not disappoint.  Cubs Ace Carlos Zambrano pitched the 3rd and 4th innings and did not allow a run.  Zambrano only gave up 1 hit and struck out one batter.  Ryan Dempster pitched a perfect 9th inning striking out all 3 batters he faced.  Dempster’s dominating performance helped send the 2008 All-Star Game into extra innings.  Carlos Marmol preserved the tie for the National League in the 13th inning with another dominating performance by a Cubs pitcher.  Marmol did not allow a hit or a run and he struck out 2 of the 4 batters he faced.  Only one hitter reached against Marmol – on a fielding error by Florida marlins 2nd baseman Dan Uggla – that was Uggla’s 3rd error of the game.  Carlos Marmol replaced Cubs closer Kerry Wood on the National League squad since Wood is battling a blister on his finger.

The hitters from Chicago fared much worse than the pitchers.  The only Cubs or White Sox player to reach base in the 2008 All-Star Game was Cubs 3rd baseman Aramis Ramirez.  Ramirez reached base with a walk in his only at-bat of the game.  Cubs Catcher Geovani Soto was 0-2 with a strikeout; Cubs Right Fielder  Kosuke Fukudome was 0-2 with a strikeout; White Sox Left Fielder Carlos Quentin was 0-4 with a strikeout (he also left 4 runners on base); and White Sox 3rd baseman Joe Crede was 0-1in his only at-bat.

The American League won the 2008 All-Star Game 4-3 when Michael Young drove in Justin Mourneau on a sacrifice fly with 1 out in the bottom of the 15th inning.  The American League representative in the World Series will now have home field advantage during the World Series.
