New Meadowlands Stadium to Host 2014 “Cold Weather” Super Bowl

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010 | New York Giants, New York Jets, NFL, Sports, Super Bowl | No Comments

NFL owners have approved the New Meadowlands Stadium (home stadium to the New York Giants & Jets) to host the 2014 Super Bowl.  It will be the first ever “cold weather” stadium (without a dome) to host a Super Bowl game.  Up until now, stadiums could not even make a bid to host the Super Bowl.  The NFL decided to make an exception for the New York area alone seeing that it just constructed the New Meadowlands Stadium which will host NFL homes game during the upcoming 2010 NFL schedule.

Giants Co-owner Jonathan Tisch had this to say about the selection — “We believe the owners have the faith in us that 3 1/2 years from now we’ll put on a remarkable event.  The greatest game in the world will be played on the greatest stage in the world.”

The slogan for New York’s Super Bowl was “Make Some History”.  New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he and his city are honored to host the big game — “People talk about the weather, but, you know, this is football, not beach volleyball… America came to the rescue of New York, and that’s something I think that New Yorkers have never forgotten.  This is a little bit of our chance to say thank you.”

While in theory this is a memorable decision, it could be a total disaster.  What if the New York tri-state area is in the middle of a 2-3 foot snow storm like it endured several times this past winter.  What if flights are canceled and people can’t even make it in for the big game.  Better book your trip for a few days early just in case we see some of the same volatile weather that we saw this past year.

Plus, if there is bad weather, with winds whipping through the already windy stadium, what does that mean for the level of play for the game.  You could have the best teams with the best players from both conferences battling the wind and snow and ice instead of each other.  That would be a major disaster as well.

Guess we’ll see how it all plays out, but I doubt we’ll have another cold weather Super Bowl site selected until this one plays itself out in February 2014.

Indianapolis Colts v. New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV

Monday, January 25th, 2010 | Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, New York Jets, NFL, Sports | No Comments

The Indianapolis Colts will play the New Orleans Saints in the Super Bowl XLIV in Miami on Sunday, February 7th.  It will be a showdown between arguably the best Quarterback of All-Time – 4-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning – and Drew Brees the leader of the NFL’s top offense during the 2009-2010 NFL season.  With both defenses being good and underrated, it shapes up to be one of the most exciting Super Bowls in recent years.

The Colts dismantled the New York Jets 30-17 in the AFC Championship Game yesterday in Indianapolis.  Although the Jets jumped out to a 17-6 2nd quarter lead behind the arm of Mark Sanchez, you just knew that the Colts would come back to win after Manning hit Austin Collie for a touchdown pass with less than 2 minutes to go before the 1st half ended.  The 2nd half wasn’t even close as the Colts strolled to an easy victory.

The Saints outlasted the Minnesota Vikings 31-28 in Overtime in the NFC Championship Game yesterday in New Orleans.  As much as you’d like to say that the Saints “earned” the victory, you can’t help but wonder how the game would have turned out IF the Vikings didn’t commit 5 turnovers and IF any of the 3 questionable on field calls that were reviewed in the overtime period went against the Saints instead of for the Saints.  My guess is that we’d be seeing Brett Favre battling Manning for the Super Bowl title in 2 weeks.

We’ll have more on each Conference Championship Games in the coming days.  There were so much to digest and analyze there and we don’t want to burn out too soon with overblown Super Bowl coverage…

Jets, Colts to Battle in AFC Championship Game on Sunday

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010 | Indianapolis Colts, New York Jets, NFL, Sports | No Comments

The New York Jets will battle the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship Game at 3PM EST on Sunday, January 24th.

The Jets have pulled off 2 road upset wins in Cincinnati and San Diego to make it to the AFC Championship Game.  Can they make it 3 in a row?  The Jets will use a heavy dose of Thomas Jones and Shonn Greene in order to eat some clock and keep the ball out of the hands of the Colts’ MVP Quarterback Peyton Manning.  If the Jets can establish a good rushing attack and then open up a safe passing attack for rookie Quarterback Mark Sanchez on friendly 1st and 2nd downs, they could keep it close.  And then anything is possible.

For the Colts, playing on their home turf with Manning leading a potent aerial attack, they have to like their odds of advancing to the Super Bowl.  The Jets will try to blitz the hell out of Manning to disrupt the Colts passing game, but it will be a tough road to hoe.  Reggie Wayne is a legitimate NFL superstar wide receiver and young wide-outs Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon have also emerged as reliable threats.  When you throw in all-Pro tight end Dallas Clark, it makes it almost impossible to defend the Colts on every play.  Jets All-Pro cornerback will try to contain Wayne on a consistent basis, so it will be up to the rest of the Jets secondary to limit big plays elsewhere.  It should be a fun chess match to watch.

My mind tells me that Peyton Manning and the tough Colts defense will propel the Colts into Super Bowl XVIV.  But my heart would love to see the young, up-and-coming Jets make New York proud with a surprise berth in the Championship Game.

Could New York Jets Host AFC Championship Game?

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010 | New York Jets, NFL, San Diego Chargers, Sports | No Comments

Call me crazy, but it looks like the New York Jets – the AFC’s 5th seed – could end up hosting the AFC Championship at the Meadowlands in New Jersey next Sunday if a few things bounce their way.  First, it would take the Baltimore Ravens – the AFC’s 6th seed – defeating the Colts in Indianapolis on Saturday night.  Then it would take the Jets defeating the Chargers in San Diego on Sunday.  Both outcomes would be upsets, but crazier things have happened.

The Jets are flying high with 2 straight wins to end the NFL season to make the playoffs.  The Jets made a statement against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 17 – shutting out the Bengals 37-0 at home – it was their 1st home shut out since the 2003 NFL season.  The Jets defense swarmed all over the Bengals right from the start – QB Carson Palmer completed just 1 pass for 0 yards in the 1st half, as the Bengals possessed the ball for just a little bit over 5 minutes in the 1st half (the Jets held the ball for over 24 minutes amassing an insurmountable 27-0 lead. The Bengals managed just a net of 72 yards offense the entire game!

With the win in Week 17, the Jets set up a rematch with the Bengals in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.  But this time the game would be in Cincinnati and the Bengals were confident that they would rally to take down the Jets.  It looked good from the start as the Bengals moved the ball on offense and eventually scored on a touchdown pass from Carson Palmer to Laveranues Coles to give the Bengals an early 7-0 lead.  The Jets then rattled off 21 straight points on rushing touchdowns from Shonn Greene and Thomas Jones and a passing touchdown from Mark Sanchez.  The Jets took control of the game with a 21-7 lead heading into the 4th quarter and the rest was history.

Jets’ 1st year head coach Rex Ryan is confident of their chances:  “This wasn’t our goal to make the playoffs.  Our goals are much higher.  We were 4-6 and we had a mission with the team.  It went from impossible to improbable, back to impossible and then to inevitable.”  The Jets will use their top rated defense (they led the NFL in total defense, passing defense and points allowed) to try to slow down Phillip Rivers’ high-octane Chargers offense this Sunday.  Can’t wait for the 4 great games this weekend.

The Good – Tom Brady & The Bad – Mark Sanchez

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 | Mark Sanchez, New England Patriots, New York Jets, NFL, Randy Moss, Sports, Thomas Jones, Tom Brady, Wes Welker | No Comments

APTOPIX Titans Patriots Football

It was a tale of 2 stories for competing AFC East quarterbacks over the weekend.  Tom Brady of the New England Patriots and Mark Sanchez of the New York Jets had vastly different games in Week 6 of the NFL schedule.  Looks likes Patriots tickets are going to be a lot harder to come by than Jets tickets during the 2009 NFL schedule.  The same couldn’t be said 4 weeks ago when the Jets upset the Patriots 16-9 at Giants Stadium in Week 2 of the NFL season on Sunday, September 20, 2009.

The Good – Tom Brady – In the Patriots 59-0 shutout of the Tennessee Titans this past Sunday at Foxboro Stadium just outside Boston, the Patriots fought through the snow and sleet of a noreaster to put a pasting on the fallen Titans.  Tom Brady completed 29 of 34 passes for 380 yards and threw for 6 touchdowns – 3 to Randy Moss, 2 to Wes Welker and 1 to Kevin Faulk.  But the big stat came in the 2nd quarter – with the Patriots leading 10-0 with under 10 minutes to play in the half, Brady led the Patriots offense on a dazzling display of aerial attack that led to 5 touchdown passes in a span of 9 minutes and 43 seconds that gave the Patriots a 45-0 halftime.  It was really something to watch and an unbelievable feat.  The Patriots set the following NFL records – Brady’s 5 touchdown passes in the 2nd quarter; the 45-0 halftime lead and the 59-point margin of victory was the biggest margin of victory since the AFL-NFL merger back in 1970.

The Bad – Mark Sanchez – In the Jets 16-13 overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, Mark Sanchez had his worst game as a pro – throwing 5 interceptions that let the Bills erase a 13-3 halftime lead.  The Jets didn’t score a single point after Thomas Jones rushed for a 71-yard touchdown with 7:31 to go in the 1st half.  Sanchez completed just 10 of 29 passes for 119 yards.  He did not have any touchdown passes and he ended the day with a dismal 8.3 passer rating.  Ouch.  At least he manned up to his mistakes: “I don’t know if I could play any worse.  It was totally my fault and I owe these guys a lot.”

The Jets who were once “in control” of the AFC East have now dropped 3 straight games and they trail the Patriots by 1 game.  After averaging 21+ points in their 1st 3 games (all wins), the Jets have averaged just 16+ points a game in their 3 losses.  Could this be a bad trend for Sanchez and the Jets?  Not good timing especially with the veteran Patriots back atop the AFC East and firing on all cylinders…

Dolphins Top Jets 31-27 in Thrilling Monday Night Football

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009 | Chad Henne, Mark Sanchez, Miami Dolphins, Monday Night Football, New York Jets, NFL, Ronnie Brown, Sports, Thomas Jones | No Comments

Jets Dolphins Football

What a game! What a battle between 2 AFC East division rivals! The last team with the ball ended up winning phenomenal 4th quarter football.  The Dolphins and Jets did something in the 4th quarter that no teams had done in the history of the NFL.  The 2 teams combined for 5 touchdowns in the 4th quarter, and while this feat has been done before, it was the 1st time that each score created a lead change for the team scoring.  Unbelievable, especially from 2 young QB’s.

Here’s how it all went down.  The Jets led the Dolphins 13-10 at halftime and after a flat, scoreless 4th quarter, the Jets still maintained a slim 3-point lead on the road in Miami.  But that’s when all hell broke loose.

Just 43 seconds into the 4th quarter, Chad Henne hit Anthony Fasano with a 2-yard TD pass to give the Dolphins a 17-13 lead.

With just over 12 minutes left, young Jets QB led the Jets on a stellar drive that culminated in a 1 yard TD run by Thomas Jones to give the Jets the 20-17 lead.

But it only took Henne a little over 2 minutes to give the Dolphins the lead back.  This time Henne hit Ted Ginn Jr. for a 53-yard catch and run that gave the Dolphins a 24-20 lead.

After another solid drive by Sanchez and the Jets, Thomas Jones capped off the scoring drive with his 2nd TD of the quarter.  The Jets led 27-24.

But Henne wanted to give the hometown crowd something to cheer about.  With just over 5 minutes to play, Henne led the Dolphins on a 70-yard touchdown drive that ended with a Ronnie Brown 2 uyard TD run that gave the Dolphins the lead for good at 31-27.

Crazy stuff, but fun to watch.

Young QB Sanchez had another good start – 12 of 24 for 172 yards with 1 TD and no interceptions – good for an 87.5 passer rating.

Young QB Henne had an even better game – 20 of 26 for 241 yards with 2 TD’s and no interceptions – good for a 130.4 passer rating.

The Jets have now lost 2 in a row, but they are still tied atop the AFC East with the New England Patriots with a 3-2 record.  The Dolphins may have salvaged their season with the come-from-behind win – they are just 1 game behind each of the Jets and Patriots at 2-3.
