Lebron James, Cavs Crush Celtics 124-95 in Boston
Friday, May 7th, 2010 | Boston Celtics, Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Cavaliers, MLB, NBA, New York Yankees, Sports | 1 Comment
Ouch – the Cleveland Cavaliers crushed the Boston Celtics 124-95 tonight – it was the worst home playoff loss in the storied Celtics’ franchise history. How does a game like this get that out of hand?
It’s simple when Lebron James is on the court. The Cavs raced out to a 36-19 point 1st quarter lead behind 21 points from the 2-time reigning NBA Most Valuable Player. By halftime, the Cavs led the Celtics by 22 points. James finished the night with 38 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. But he also had help from teammates Antawn Jamison (12 points and 9 rebounds) and Shaquille O’Neal (12 points and 9 rebounds).
It was not a night to remember for Boston sports fans. Just 4 days ago, Boston sports fans all across the country were going nuts as the Celtics and Bruins won big playoff games and the Red Sox ended a 3-game skid by cruising to an easy win over the Angels at Fenway Park. Tonight is was the exact opposite. While the Cavs were crushing the Celtics, just a few miles away, the hated New York Yankees were pounding the Red Sox 10-3 at Fenway and the Bruins lost a demoralizing overtime game to the Flyers in Philly. Paul Pierce who scored just 11 points in the loss was disgusted with his team’s play — “That was embarrassing. That’s embarrassing when you lose at home like that. We just let our guard down… You’ve got to know the Cleveland Cavaliers are going to come in here with all the urgency in the world. They took the fight to us early, and we didn’t respond to it.”
The Celtics still have a chance to even the score on Sunday with the afternoon affair against the Cavs. Guess it can’t get any worse than this…

Sweep Central – 3 ALDS Teams Advance with Weekend Sweeps
Monday, October 12th, 2009 | Boston Red Sox, General, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Los Angeles Dodgers, MLB, Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, Sports, St. Louis Cardinals | No Comments

It was an anti-climatic 1st round of the playoffs – with 3 teams advancing with sweeps over the weekend. Although there were some good games in each series, each team advanced with a Game 3 win on the losing team’s home turf over the weekend.
On Saturday, the Los Angeles Dodgers took out the St. Louis Cardinals with a 5-1 win in St. Louis. It was the 2nd year in a row that the Dodgers swept the NL Central division winner out of the playoffs in the NLDS (Chicago Cubs in 2008). The Dodgers will either play the Phillies in a rematch of the 2008 NLCS or the Colorado Rockies. Key game – the Dodgers rallied for 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning of Game 2 to defeat closer Ryan Franklin after Matt Holliday’s botched flyball error kept the game alive.
On Sunday, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim stunned the Red Sox faithful with a 3-run rally off Boston Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon in the top of the 9th inning. The Angels trailed 5-1 heading into the 8th inning, but scored 2 runs in the 8th and 3 runs in the 9th inning to complete the sweep. The Angels will face the New York Yankees in the ALCS in the Bronx on Friday night. Key stat – Papelbon had never allowed a single run in 27 career post-season innings.
And on Sunday evening, the Yankees completed the 3-game sweep of the Minnesota Twins at the Metrodome with a 4-1 win. Some long-time Yankees were instrumental in the Game 3 win – Andy Pettite picked up the win, Mariano Rivera recorded the save, and Jorge Posada clubbed a solo home run in the 7th inning to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead. Key Game – in Game 2, Alex Rodriguez crushed a 2-run HR to deep right center field off of Twins’ closer Joe Nathan in the 9th inning to tie the game at 3. Mark Teixeira went on to win the game for the game for the Yankees with his line drive walk-off HR to lead off the bottom of the 11th inning.
Stay tuned for some more great MLB playoff action…

Dodgers Take 2-0 Lead Over Cards; Lackey, Angels Shut Out Red Sox
Friday, October 9th, 2009 | Adam Wainwright, Boston Red Sox, Casey Blake, General, John Lackey, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Los Angeles Dodgers, MLB, Mark Loretta, Matt Holiday, Ryan Franklin, Sports, St. Louis Cardinals | No Comments

There was some great MLB Playoff action on Thursday in both the National League and American League.
In the late afternoon, the Dodgers took a commanding 2-0 series lead over the Cardinals with a dramatic 3-2 9th inning win. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th inning, Matt Holliday misplayed a flyball that would have given the Cards a 2-1 win. Instead, the error kept the Dodgers alive and the Dodgers took advantage. Casey Blake worked a walk off of Cards reliever Ryan Franklin, and Rafael Belliard tied the game with an RBI single to center field. After a passed ball and a walk loaded the bases, Mark Loretta’s pinch-hit single drove in Blake with the game-winning run. The Cards looked to be in the driver’s seat in the series with their 2 aces pitching in Games 1 and 2 – Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright. But neither emerged with a win, and the Cards now find themselves in the position of having to win 3 straight games against the Dodgers in order to advance to the NLCS.
Meanwhile in the AL game also on the west coast, John Lackey of the Angels shut down the Boston Red Sox with 7 1/3 scoreless innings. Lackey outdueled Jon Lester who gave up a 3-run HR to Torii Hunter in the 5th inning, and the Angels went on to win 5-0. It was a great start for the Angels who have been eliminated from the ALDS by the Red Sox each of the last 2 seasons and 3 times over the last 5 years.
So far so good for exciting MLB playoff action.

Angels on Top of the AL West; Set Sights on Beating Red Sox
Tuesday, September 29th, 2009 | Boston Red Sox, General, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, MLB, Mike Scioscia, Sports | No Comments

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim clinched the AL West division crown on Monday night with an 11-0 shutout of the Texas Rangers. Overcoming the tragic death of starting pitcher Nick Adenhart in April, the Angels rallied around each other all season long to make the playoffs for the 5th time in 6 seasons. But now the sights are set on October baseball and beating their nemesis – the Boston Red Sox. Since winning Game 7 of the 2002 World Series, the Angels have won just 1 playoff series. The Red Sox have beaten the Angels in 3 playoff series during that span, including the last 2 seasons. Not good seeing that the Angels will host the Red Sox in the ALDS next week in Anaheim.
Manager Mike Scioscia had this to say about the task at hand – “It never gets tired, and it never gets old… We overcame a lot of obstacles, a lot more than anybody expected. I definitely feel we haven’t played our best yet, and this year is different. But if you want to put your money on Boston, go ahead, do it. We believe in ourselves.” Well said, Mike, but until you can knock off the big gorilla in the room, I’m going to side with the big gorilla. Boston in 4 at Fenway Park…

After a getting crushed Saturday the Boston Red Sox came back for a big win Sunday against the Rays. Papelbon the All-Star closer put himself in a jam when he allowed the first two Rays to get on base, but he was able to strak out the next three batters for the save. “I basically just put myself in a situation where I had to go in ‘punch out’ mode,” Papelbon said. “It’s not something I necessarily want to be in.” The Sox took two out of three in the breaking a six consecutive series victories by the Rays against Boston.Tampa Bay is 6-4 against Boston this season.
Dustin Pedroia had to leave in the 4th after straining his right groin during an at bat in the prior inning. The team said he is expected to play Wednesday.

A long list of pitchers Michael Bowden, Clay Buchholz, Manny Delcarmen, Felix Doubront, Miguel Gonzalez, Devern Hansack, Hunter Jones, Wes Littleton, Justin Masterson and Ramon Ramirez, also catcher Dusty Brow. Times are tough Sox can’t hand out long term deals, they need to pay the bills.
Varitek, Red Sox & Maine, Mets Reach Deals
Sunday, February 1st, 2009 | Boston Red Sox, MLB, Sports | No Comments

Two late MLB deals to report:
The Boston Red Sox and free agent catcher Jason Varitek agreed on a 2-year deal on Friday. Varitek will earn $5 million during the 2009 MLB season. The Red Sox have a club option for the 2010 MLB season which would pay Tek $5 million if exercised. Tek has a player option for the 2010 MLB season which would pay him $3 million if exercised. The 2010 year also has incentives built in which could increase the payout by an additional $2 million.
The New York Mets and starting pitcher John Maine agreed upon a 1-year deal that will pay him $2.6 million during the 2009 MLB season. This means that the 2 sides will avoid salary arbitration. Maine had requested $3 million, while the Mets countered with $2.2 million. Maine will earn an additional $25,000 if he pitches 200 innings or more. During the 2008 MLB season, Maine earned $450,000 and went 10-8 with a 4.18 ERA in 25 starts.

Red Sox will not raise 2009 ticket price
Thursday, November 13th, 2008 | Boston Red Sox, MLB, Sports | No Comments
The Red Sox have just announced they will not raise 2009 season ticket prices. This is the 1st time in 13 years prices will stay the same. The team that drew 3 million fans last year and has 469 consecutive home game sellouts. The questions I have is a team that has won 2 world series in the last 10 years is to going to raise prices, what will the Cubs do? I bet they hit the fans with a increase even after getting swept 2 years in a row in the playoffs and not winning a World Series in over 100 years.
