Jim Nantz Has Harsh Words for Tiger Woods
Tuesday, April 13th, 2010 | Golf, Sports, The Masters, Tiger Woods | No Comments
Long-time CBS broadcaster Jim Nantz had some harsh words for Tiger Words after his display at the Masters. Ever since Woods came clean about his extra-marital affairs, Woods has talked about being a “different” person both on and off the golf course. Woods talked about being more reserved on the golf course and less inclined to have “offensive” outbursts after a bad shot or upon hearing the click of a camera when he takes a swing. But after watching Tiger during his 4 rounds at Augusta over the past weekend, it was clear that Tiger is still the same old Tiger.
In Saturday’s 3rd round, you could hear Tiger yell — “Tiger Woods, you suck” followed by an offensive expletive. It was loud enough for the TV microphones to pick it up live on air. Then on Sunday, Woods uttered “Jesus Christ” after a poor tee shot on the 13th hole.
Nantz went off on Woods’ behavior given his recent promises that he would be a different player on the course. Here are a few snippits from Nantz:
“If I said what he said on the air, I would be fired. I read in the USA Today and it was called “mild language”. Someone on my broadcast dismissed it as him having a camera in his face. Well, guess what? Phil Mickelson had a camera in his face all week and did you even hear him come close to approaching that? He didn’t hit every shot the way he wanted. Have you ever heard Arnold Palmer or Jack Nicklaus use that kind of language? What are the parameters between what’s right or wrong?”
“How about the father and son who are standing right there by the tee? How about the hundreds of people who around that tee who hear that? How about the hundreds of letters I’ve gotten through the years from people who have been outraged at the language they’ve heard there and have written me and said, ‘Why don’t you guys ever say something about that?’”
So much for having more respect for the game of golf and for trying to avoid any profanity-laden outbursts when he makes a bad shot. Guess he is still Tiger being Tiger. And if that’s the case, does anyone have any pics of Tiger visiting the local Augusta establishment? Please, please — send them our way if you do…
Phil Mickelson Wins 2010 Masters @ Augusta
Sunday, April 11th, 2010 | Golf, Sports, The Masters, Tiger Woods | No Comments
Phil Mickelson shot a sparkling 5-under par 67 to finish at 16-under par for the tournament, 3 shots ahead of Lee Westwood (13-under par). It was Mickelson’s 3rd Masters Championship. It was a special win for Mickelson and his family, who have been dealing with breast cancer diagnoses for both his wife and his mom within the last year. Cancer treatment prevented his wife from walking the course with him this week/weekend, but she was there to great him with a hug and embrace at the end of the round. Mickelson overcame some recent demons at Augusta and played a near-perfect round while others – including Tiger Woods – faltered around him. Mickelson had this to say about being able to wear his 3rd Green Jacket — “I wasn’t sure if she was going to be there. We’ve been through a lot this year. It means a lot to share some joy together. It’s been such an incredible week, an emotional week. And to cap it off with a victory is something I can’t put into words… It’s something we’ll share for the rest of our lives.”
Anthony Kim shot a day-best 7-under par to finish in sole possession of 3rd place at 12-under par. Nick Watney also matched that 7-under score for the day, but he finished at 8-under for the tournament. Tiger Woods finished in a tie for 4th place with his week-long playing partner K.J. Choi who also finished at 11-under par. Woods shot 3-under for the day, but his 5 bogeys cost him a chance to stay closer to Mickelson and Westwood throughout the day.
The folks at the Masters and CBS couldn’t have asked for anything more for this year’s championship. Unbelievable storylines and an unbelievable finish.
Tiger Woods Sitting Pretty @ Masters in Augusta
Saturday, April 10th, 2010 | Golf, Sports, The Masters, Tiger Woods | 1 Comment
Tiger Woods is sitting pretty in his return to golf at the Masters in Augusta this weekend. Not only did Tiger make the cut, he is right in the thick of things, just 2 shots off the lead. Woods shot his best opening round score ever on Thursday – a 4-under par 68 – and he followed that up with a consistent 2-under par 70 on Friday.
Woods trails two British players – Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter – who share the lead at 8-under par. Woods is also tied with Phil Mickelson, Ricky Barnes, Anthony Kim and K.J. Choi.
Woods loves his position, as he is very familiar with coming from behind on Saturday to make a move at the Masters — “I felt I could put myself in contention. I didn’t have the luxury of playing tournaments coming in here, so I had to be more focused on my practice sessions coming into it and then take more out of them than most people would.”
Look out guys – we could see Tiger in a Green Jacket on Sunday — what a story that would make…

Tigers Woods Announces his Return – @ 2010 Masters
Tuesday, March 16th, 2010 | Golf, Sports, Tiger Woods | No Comments
Tiger Woods announced today that he will be returning to the game of golf at the 2010 Masters in Augusta, Georgia in a little over 3 weeks. It will certainly be a “Masters to Remember”.
Woods issued a statement today, portions of which read as follows: “The Masters is where I won my first major and I view this tournament with great respect. After a long and necessary time away from the game, I feel like I’m ready to start my season at Augusta.. The major championships have always been a special focus in my career and, as a professional, I think Augusta is where I need to be, even though it’s been a while since I last played… I have undergone almost two months of inpatient therapy and I am continuing my treatment. Although I’m returning to competition, I still have a lot of work to do in my personal life.”
Woods last played on November 15th when he won the Australian Masters in Melbourne, Australia. Woods has won 82 worldwide tournaments, including 14 major championships – 4 of them Masters wins. He has been out of the public eye since a November car accident raised awareness to his marital infidelities and since then he has been trying to save his marriage and undergo treatment to prove to his wife – Elin Nordegren-Woods – that he is a changed man. Hah!
18 alleged affairs and two months of therapy and the guys is all-of-a-sudden a faithful man. If you believe that one, I’ll sell you the grounds that Augusta National occupies for a buck.
In any event, Woods’ return will certainly help TV ratings and draw flocks of people to Augusta National for the 2010 Masters. Can’t wait to see how many sponsors who gave up on Woods start banging on his door – are you there Buick, Accenture? – once he wins this thing in a few weeks. Can’t wait to see the hypocrisy in action when it mega dollars are at stake…
Tiger Woods To “Appear & Speak” Today
Friday, February 19th, 2010 | Golf, Sports, Tiger Woods | No Comments
At 11am EST this morning, Tiger Woods will break his silence. It’s about time.
We have not heard directly from Woods since he smashed his car against a tree outside his house in the early morning of November 27th. Since then, we’re not entirely sure what he’s been up to.
At least a dozen women have come forward claiming sexual relations with the world’s best golfer. It is unclear if his wife – Elin Nordegren-Woods – will be willing to forgive the superstar for his transgressions. It is also unclear whether Woods will golf this year.
What will we get out of Tiger on Friday? Probably not much. Woods and his entourage have complete control over the “appearance”. Only friends, colleagues and close associates will be permitted in the Sunset Room of the TPC Sawgrass Clubhouse on Friday. Three networks will carry the statement live – ABC, CBS and NBC. The Associated Press, Reuters and Bloomberg will each have one writer present, while the Golf Writers Association will have 3 writers present. Woods will not be taking any questions during the appearance.
Woods’ agent Mark Steinberg had this to say about what we can expect: “While Tiger feels that what happened is fundamentally a matter between he and his wife, he also recognizes that he has hurt and let down a lot of other people who were close to him. He also let down his fans. He wants to begin the process of making amends and that’s what he’s going to discuss.”
I have a feeling that this will be totally overblown. It’s probably not going to be anything special and we probably won’t get all the answers we want. My only hope is that Elin is there right by his side standing by his man – how great would that be – like any good “politicians’ wife”…
