No MRI for Santana

Monday, March 2nd, 2009 | MLB | No Comments

santanaMets ace Johan Santana said he felt OK after throwing a bullpen session Sunday morning, and the team said no to sending him to New York for  an MRI on his left elbow. Santana who tossed with the new closer Francisco Rodriguez  before heading to the bullpen for a 15-min session with Omir Santos. The 29-year-old threw 31 pitches just a few hours before the Mets win over Houston Astros, 13-1. “This is the first time in the last four days that I’ve thrown, but I feel fine and don’t think there should be any problems,” Santana said.

Before this session, Santana was heading back to NY on his day off for a precautionary MRI on the left elbow. Later the team decided to keep him in Florida and all the Mets said to the media was he was not scheduled for an MRI. Sanatana was told that an irritated triceps tendon is causing the discomfort in his elbow. Santana hoped to pitch for his native country of Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic, but it looks like he will be sitting it out. Santana also plans to take a few days off before he pitches again which makes it more likely he will not pitch on opening day.
