Blackhawks Start Post All-Star Break Run With 3-2 Win Over Ducks

Thursday, January 29th, 2009 | Chicago Blackhawks, NHL, Sports | No Comments

The Chicago Blackhawks got off to the right start on Wednesday night with a 3-2 win over the Ducks in Anaheim. It was a great win for a few reasons. First, the Blackhawks had lost 3 of their last 4 games, so it was good to get a “W” under their belts. Second, the Blackhawks avoided a post-All-Star Break funk to start off the 2nd half of the season with an all-important victory. Third, the trip to Anaheim marked the 1st game of an 8-game road trip, so every win on the road will be a big one for the Blackhawks in their chase for a high seed in the NHL’s Western Conference.

The Blackhawks held a 2-1 advantage after the 1st period on goals by Adam Burish – his 3rd goal of the season – and Patrick Kane – his 17th goal of the season. The Blackhawks extended the lead to 3-1 just 3 minutes into the 2nd period on Jonathan Toews 14th goal of the season. Duncan Keith – in his first action in several games since suffering a concussion – assisted on the Toews goal. Blackhawks Goalie Nikolai Khabibulin did the rest. He allowed only 1 more goal the rest of the way to preserve the 3-2 win for the Blackhawks. Overall, Khabibulin saved 36 of 38 shots on goal and improved his record to 14-4-5 on the season.

Next up for the Blackhawks is another game tonight in the L.A. area – against the Kings at the Staples Center. The Blackhawks still hold the 4th seed in the Western Conference with a 46-26-12 record and 60 points. They still have a lot of work to do if they want to catch the Detroit Red Wings for the Central Division title – they trail the Red Wings by 9 points – but they still have a nice 7-point cushion over the Ducks and Coyotes for the 4th spot in the playoffs.

Bulls End 5-Game Skid, Top Clippers 95-75 in L.A.

bulls beat clippers.jpg

It’s about time. The Chicago Bulls finally got a win – beating the 10-35 Clippers at the Staples Center on Wednesday night. The Bulls took a 3-point lead into halftime, and then put the game away with a 26-9 edge over the Clippers in the 3rd quarter. It was the first win for the Bulls in 6 tries following their win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday, January 15th. Luol Deng led the Bulls with 23 points, 9 rebounds and 3 steals. Derrick Rose chipped in 21 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists, but also turned the ball over 5 times. Tyrus Thomas put forth a solid night with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 2 steals. Joakim Noah just missed a double-double with 10 points and 8 rebounds. Ben Gordon had his highest assist total of the 2008-9 NBA season with 8 assists and he also scored 11 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. The Bulls out-rebounded the Clippers 52-33.

The Clippers only had 3 players score in double-digits – Eric Gordon with 19, Fred Jones with 11 and Al Thornton with 10.The Clippers now have the 3rd worst record in the NBA, ahead of only the Sacramento Kings (10-37) and the Washington Wizards (9-36).

The Bulls evened their record on the current 7-game road trip at 1-1. The Bulls record is 19-27 and although they are 8 games under .500, they still only trail the Milwaukee Bucks and New York Knicks by 1.5 games for the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference. What a joke…

More roids for Bonds

Thursday, January 29th, 2009 | Barry Bonds, MLB | No Comments

barry_bondsBarry Bonds perjury trial has not started yet, but its not looking good for him. ESPN announced today that the Feds have an urine sample that links Bonds to anabolic steroids. In 2003 Bonds testified to a grand jury that he did use the “cream” and the “clear” but he did not know that they were performance-enhancing. With the urine samples this could prove he used other steroids. When Bonds testified he was asked if he ever took steroids, he answered no. The government is saying he lied under oath and his perjury trial is scheduled to begin March 2.

Federal agents raided the home of mother-in-law of personal trainer Greg Anderson, he was Bonds’ trainer. She is the target of a tax investigation and Anderson’s lawyer is saying they are trying to pressure Greg to testify at Bonds’ upcoming trial. Mark Gergos, the lawyer for Anderson, said he believes the raid on Wednesday is in response to his refusal to tell prosecutors whether Anderson would testify. “They trashed the place and took all kinds of stuff,” he said. “The execution was illegal and a grotesque example of bullying.”

Bonds who hit 762 home runs and beat Hank Aaron record has not officially announced if he will return to baseball. Back in Dec he did say that he was not sure if he wanted to retire. This could be harder then Bonds thinks since there are no teams willing to offer him a deal right now. I’m sure the fact that he could go to jail is not helping him.

Update: Looks like Bobby Estalella is going to provide significant testimony to support the governments contention that Barry Bonds knowingly took steroids. According to ESPN two sources have confirmed that Estalealla has been subpoenaed to testify. Estalella is expected to testify he has first-hand knowledge about bond’s steroid use.
