Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford won the 2008 Heisman Trophy on Saturday night. Bradford garnered 300 1st place votes and 1726 total votes. Texas Quarterback Colt McCoy finished in 2nd place with 266 1st place votes and 1604 total votes. Florida Quarterback Tim Tebow – the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner – finished in 3rd place with 309 1st place votes and 1575 total votes. Tebow’s bid to match Ohio State Running Back Archie Griffin’s 2 trophies fell just short even though he was awarded the most 1st place votes out of the 3 finalists. It was the first time in over 50 years that the player who won the most 1st place votes finished in 3rd place (Oklahoma’s Tommy McDonald holds that distinction during 1956 voting).
Bradford led the nation with 48 touchdown passes. He also led the highest scoring offense in college football history – Oklahoma is the 1st NCAA college football team to score at least 60 points in 9 straight games. Bradford became only the 3rd player to win the award without having the most 1st place votes (the other 2 were Notre Dame’s Paul Hornung in 1956 and Oklahoma’s Billy Sims in 1978).
#1 Florida and #2 Oklahoma, both 12-1, will meet in the BCS National Championship game in January 2009 to determine the 2008 National Champion. It will mark the 2nd time that Heisman Trophy winners (Tim Tebow 2007 and Sam Bradford 2008) will meet in the title game. In the 2005 Orange Bowl, 2004 winner Matt Leinart of USC faced off against 2003 winner Jason White of Oklahoma. USC defeated Oklahoma to win the championship.
