Blackhawks Blank Senators 2-0
Thursday, December 11th, 2008 | Chicago Blackhawks, NHL, Sports | No Comments
The Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Ottawa Senators 2-0 on Wednesday night. The game was not expected to be a shootout as the Senators have scored an NHL-low 63 goals this season and had given up only 63 goals entering the game, 1 of only 6 teams to have allowed fewer than 70 games. And the result lived up to the pre-game analysis. The Blackhawks scored on a 1st period power play goal by Patrick Kane, just 5 minutes into the game. The game stayed at 1-0 the rest of the way until the Blackhawks added an empty net goal by Troy Brouwer with less than a minute to play. Blackhawks Goalie Cristobal Huet picked up his 1st shutout this season. He stopped 23 shots on goal and improved to 6-5-3 on the season.
The Blackhawks are now 13-6-7 and have 33 points, good for the 6th seed in the NHL’s Western Conference. The Blackhawks play in Denver on Friday night and then return home for a game against the Blue Jackets on Sunday night. After that, they embark on a 3-game west coast road trip next week – facing the Oilers, Flames and Canucks. It will be important for the Blackhawks to play well against Colorado and Columbus, as Calgary and Vancouver each have more points than Chicago.

The Broadway Recession
Thursday, December 11th, 2008 | Broadway, General, Theatre | No Comments
With 7% unemployment rate and the auto makers on the verge of bankruptcy people are cutting back a lot. Broadway shows are getting hit hard with the current economy and many of the big shows can’t fill half their seats. Equus, Young Frankenstein, Grease, and Hair Spary are all schedule to close by February. High production costs and a large jump in ticket prices over the last year is a major reason behind this large decline. Many shows that used to charge $90-$95 for the good seats to their shows have raised the price to $120-$140 plus fees. Unfortunately, a lot of these shows must now offer big discounts or even free tickets to keep people in the seats, but the way it looks we will be seeing more shows go dark in 2009 on top of the 14 already on the chopping block. There is also a sharp decline in tourist coming to NY and other parts of the US which will also not help Broadway in the next 12 months. Broadway needs to figure out a way to keep people in the seats and right now it looks like prices is the biggest sticking point.
