Bears Crush Rams 27-3; Now Look To Battle With Vikings

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008 | Chicago Bears, NFL, Sports | No Comments

forte bears.jpg

The Chicago Bears road the shoulders of Matt Forte and a bruising defense to help defeat the lowly St. Louis Rams 27-3 in the Edward Jones Dome. Forte carried the ball 20 times for a career-high 132 yards, good for a 6.6 per carry average. Forte had a 13-yard touchdown run in the 1st quarter that gave the Bears a 7-0 lead, and then a 47-yard touchdown run in the 2nd quarter that all but put the game away with a 21-point Bears lead. Kyle Orton was efficient, if not spectacular – completing 18 of 29 passes for 139 yards. Orton completed a 7-yard touchdown pass to Jason McKie in the 1st quarter, and he did not throw an interception – all of which amounted to a respectable 85.3 passer rating.

The Bears defense finally showed some teeth, albeit against a weak Rams offense playing without stars Orlando Pace and Stephen Jackson. The Bears defense knocked starting quarterback Mark Bulger out of the game after just 2 pass attempts. Replacement quarterback Trent Green threw 4 interceptions – 2 by Lance Briggs, and 1 each by Brian Urlacher and Charles “peanut” Tillman. The defensive line finally pressured the quarterback – registering 5 sacks – 2 by each of Tommie Harris and Ogunleye, and 1 by Alex Brown.

The victory allowed the Bears to keep pace with the Minnesota Vikings, who defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 30-12 on the road. The Vikings and Bears now sit atop the NFC North division with 6-5 records. The 2 teams battle it out for the outright division lead on Sunday night in Minneapolis. With only 4 games left after the contest, it is a must-win for each team. Each team will have to pull out all the stops to get the all-important victory. There are 7 teams with better records than the Bears and Vikings in the NFC, so the only realistic shot at the playoffs will be through a NFC division title berth. So it all comes down to this. Will the Bears build off of the Rams performance and put up a good fight at the Metrodome? Or will the Bears return to the form shown at Lambeau Field 2 weeks ago where the team was embarrassed 37-3? We’ll have to wait and see Sunday night. It most likely won’t end up being the shootout that saw the Bears beat the Vikings 48-41 in Week 7 on the lakefront at Soldier Field, but it should still be just as exciting nonetheless…

Bulls Top Jazz 101-100 on Hughes’ Buzzer-Beater

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008 | Chicago Bulls, NBA, Sports | No Comments

bulls jazz.jpg

What a finish! Derrick Rose had one of his best games as a pro, but it was Larry Hughes who rebounded a Rose miss with seconds left and scored the game-winning 22-foot jumper to give the Bulls the improbably 101-100 win on the road. Rose led the Bulls with 25 points (10 in the 4th quarter), 9 assists and 1 rebound. He shot 10 of 18 from the floor, including 4 for 4 from the free throw line. Hughes scored 16 points and also grabbed 5 rebounds. Drew Gooden had another strong night for the Bulls with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Joakim Noah got the start at center and grabbed 7 rebounds while scoring 6 points. Ben Gordon had an off-night for him, scoring only 15 points, while grabbing 5 rebounds and dishing out 3 assists. The loss for the Jazz in Salt Lake City was the 1st home loss for the Jazz during the 2008-9 NBA season.

Those are all the positives. But there are still some negatives with this Bulls team. The Bulls let a 6-point halftime quickly evaporate in the 3rd quarter with horrible defensive play. The Jazz outscored the Bulls 30-21 in that quarter. The Bulls interior defense was quite poor – Center Mehmet Okur scored 26 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Jazz Forwards Paul Millsap (21 points, 10 boards) and C.J. Miles (12 points and 4 assists) also had strong games. The Jazz were also playing without their 2 best players – Derron Williams and Carlos Boozer. Now I know you can’t control your schedule or who gets hurt during the course of a year (and heck, the Bulls are playing without Kirk Hinrich and Luol Deng due to injury, so what comes around goes around), so a win on the road is HUGE for this Bulls team. But it would have been nice to see them run away with this one especially after getting off to the good start on the road.

That being said, I noted that 2 wins on the 7-game “Circus Road Trip” should be seen as a success for this young Bulls team. With 2 wins under their belt, they could really build some significant confidence if they can steal one more win at San Antonio or Philadelphia. The Spurs are playing without point guard Tony Parker, and forward Manu Ginobili has just come back from an injury, so his playing time is limited. The Spurs are a much different team without those 2 players, so there is a small chance for the upset in Texas. The 76ers sit at 7-7, just 1/2 game better than the Bulls. They are tough at home though with a 5-2 record and the Bulls will have trouble matching up with the 76ers big men – Elton Brand and Thaddeus Young.

Another Frustrating Road Loss for Bulls

Monday, November 24th, 2008 | Chicago Bulls, NBA, Sports | No Comments

It was another frustrating loss for the Chicago Bulls on the road. After recovering from a slow start to erase an 8-point 1st quarter Nuggets lead, the Bulls looked like a different team in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. The Bulls played great team basketball and took the game to the Nuggets, leading by 2 points at the start of the 4th quarter. Then disaster struck.

The Bulls played a miserable 4th quarter – getting outscored 31-16 including a 13-0 run that out the game out of reach for the Bulls. The Bulls allowed 4 Nuggets players to score 21 points or more. Carmelo Anthony led the Nuggets with a great all-around night – he scored 21 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and dished out 8 assists. Chauncey Billups scored 21 points and had 8 assists. Kenyon Martin scored 26 points and added 8 boards. Even Center Nene Hilario, who only averages 15 points a game, chipped in his 2nd best scoring night of the young NBA season with 21 points.

The Bulls had 4 players with double-digit scoring. Ben Gordon led all scorers with 28 points. Derrick Rose scored 15 points and dished out 6 assists. Drew Gooden scored 21 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. And Larry Hughes scored 13 points, but shot only 6 of 15 from the field. Andres Nocioni had an off night for the Bulls and Luol Deng did not play again because of an injured hamstring.

Boy are the Bulls looking forward to getting back home to the United Center. Another tough match-up tonight against the Jazz in Utah and then it’s off to Texas to face the Spurs on Wednesday night to finish off the “west coast” portion of the road trip.
